Knit One, Purl Huh?

Hi all, and welcome to my new Thursday blog! I’ve been blogging every Monday for about four months now and just having the best time with it. I write about all things writing — method, craft and a lot about self-publishing. It’s what I do, it’s what I know, and so it’s the easiest thing for me to write about. But there is more to me than my work. I’ve actually got a number of hobbies and that’s what this Thursday blog is going to be about. This is going to be my fun blog.

I’ve got a number of hobbies, so I plan on mixing it up. One week I’ll post a knitting pattern (I’m an avid knitter, or as my family likes to call me, a knit-wit). Those blogs can be found on the “Knit One, Purl Huh?” page — called so because although I knit a lot, I don’t make very complicated patterns. These will be fun and easy patterns that even a beginning knitter will be able to master pretty quickly.

I also really enjoy health and fitness topics. I am in no way a fitness nut — I don’t run miles every day, nor do I do extreme anything. I’m happy that I get in 20 minutes at the gym every morning (all my very busy husband has time for, as since he’s my exercise partner, that’s what I do too) and I’m lazy enough that I usually skip a day here and there. I practice yoga — once a week — in a class that I’m absolutely passionate about (the key, I’ve found, is finding a great teacher you connect with, but that’ll probably be a whole blog topic for another day). On the other side of the same topic is eating right.

I’d never been obsessed with food, or even all that interested in it until I married my husband. He is passionate about it. He’s a great cook, when he has the time to spend in the kitchen — he’s one of those disgusting people who can gather whatever’s in the fridge and pantry and make something spectacular with nary a glance at a recipe. I’m not like that. I need a recipe like a fish needs water. I have, however, gotten a lot better with years of practice. Now, when I want to cook something new, I’ll find two or three recipes on the internet and then mix and match to make up my own version. It usually works out well, although there have been some really awful failures which my brave family has eaten with simply a “please don’t make this again”. They love me. I’ll post some of my successes on the page “Ready, Set, Cook”.

I also have a terrific source of recipes of Indian food in my mother-in-law, from whom my husband gets his innate talent. It’s not always easy taking the amazing creations she whips up in her kitchen in Kolkata and adapting them for my very American kitchen, but when it’s worked, it’s incredible.

So this is my idea to add a little fun and something different to this blog. If there’s anything you’d like to see — knitting project requests (maybe I’ve made it or can point you in the right direction) or recipes you’d like to see, just tell me. See you on Mondays for writing fun and on these extra pages on Thursdays with hobbies.

    I have always loved reading; it’s my escape… I hate to write! When my son was at Army Basic Training I think I may have wrote him once. I don’t know why I just do. But now, well, maybe it’s because I’m much older and a little more wiser, and the fact that I have 2 gorgeous little grand-daughters I have decided to try and write children’s books. I have a series title, “The Misadventures of Fuzzy Wuzzy The Cat”. I figured that I would let Fuzzy tell his own stories but now, I’m not so sure. Any advice? I’m thinking 3 yrs. and up… Any and all input is much appreciated.

      Sounds like you’ve got to write the book(s) first, Patricia. See what the language is like — how simple or difficult — and then you can figure out what age range it would fit. Good luck!
